If the Bone Fits, Chew It! How to Choose the Proper Bone

If the Bone Fits, Chew It! How to Choose the Proper Bone

So you might be thinking: is there really a difference between the types of sticks and bones you choose to give your dog? Indeed there is! In this share we shed some light on how to choose the proper bone for your fur baby and some of the things we, as dog guardians, must remember when sharing these canine delicacies with our furry best friends.

Stating the obvious, bones are a pleasure zone and a zone of contentment for most dogs. Chewing on bones not only keeps your dog busy, they also provide nutrients, help clean their teeth and support gum health. So important!

Something we take seriously (as non helicopter parents) is safety. Something that gets overlooked: keeping an eye on your dog once you’ve given them a bone, as some dogs chew gently while others are more aggressive. Some dogs inhale what they are chewing before you can blink an eye!

Depending on how your dog chews, this will dictate the type of bone you choose for them. Important to note: bones should never be cooked and taken away when they begin to crack.

For gentler chewing dogs: beef bones and femurs are great.

The size of the bone you choose should also be according to your dog's size. I.e. small bones for small dogs, large bones for large dogs.

For the more aggressive chewing dog: chicken necks, turkey necks, whole herring, beef, or buffalo knuckles are all great choices.

Note: Necks should be considered a meal which is important to know if your dog has pancreatitis or liver disease.

For dogs that inhale things: do not give bones larger than your pets mouth and watch them :) !

Finished with a bone? Try turning it into a broth for digestion support. Makes an excellent hydrator for kibble.
