Longtime followers of David Sinclair, PhD Scientist & Professor at Harvard Medical School, we saw the news today on a product for dogs that he and his brother have released, "Leap Years".
David is a longtime researcher of longevity and is the author of the newly released book, "Lifespan" and to have his talent behind a longevity product for dogs, is an incredible thing! We had to share the news with you since we consider you FRIENDS! And friends tell friends about what's good, especially what's good for the health, happiness and longevity of your furry family members.
In David's words, "My family LOVES animals! After years of research & a bunch of clinical trials, my brother Nick and I are proud to release our first companion animal supplement called Leap Years - a daily soft chew for dogs designed to increase vitality, engagement and overall life. Follow us at @leapyearsdog.
A clinical study in dogs showed a synergistic effect of the ingredients, which include a senolytic to help clear old zombie cells and a NAD booster to increase activity and fight aging.
The soft chew proprietary blend has been tested in dogs for bioavailability and safety studies up to 30X the retail dosage. Just because your dog is getting on in year doesn't mean they have to feel old.
Congrats to chief veterinarian Ginny Rentko, who ran Tufts vet school before joining us.
We can't wait to hear how your doggies like it.
Coming next: Leap Years for Cats!

]]>Just like us humans, our dogs don't always need the full monte in cleanse-care. You know what we mean, like the shower (for us) where we have in a hair mask, are exfoliating our entire existence, then when we hop out, are slathering our bodies head to toe in nourishing oils (our favorite is Agent Nateur), doing a lymphatic drainage with our De Le Heart wooden paddle, guasha-ing our face to get stimulate that blood flow, and the list goes on. You get it. My point: it takes TIME. We aren't having that shower everyday though. The same goes for our dogs. There will be times where they are ultra dirty and really require a double wash and deep cleanse, followed by a replenish of moisture to their skin barrier and to keep their coat and natural oils doing their thing; not only from a vanity perspective, but from a comfort and safety perspective. What do you think helps your dog's skin and coat from not roasting in the sun? Proper skin and coat maintenance. Back to our topic: a spot wash when that's all you need!
When opting for a spot wash, we love a simple warm water lavender paw soak. Simply pour a quarter cap full of whatever Groomer And George shampoo you choose into a small shallow dish with warm water (we love lavender specifically for this), and soak/dunk/wash their paws just like you or I would if we were soaking our cuticles. Reminder that all of our shampoos are highly concentrated and can be diluted 17 parts water to 1 part shampoo. Dilution is not necessary, though it truly is fantastic in controlling how much product you use depending if you're doing a spot wash or a full bath.
It really is very simple to take a shallow dish to leave at the door for upon return if paws are super messy - to quickly clean them up. Additionally, if it's your dog's face that has taken a dive into a puddle, using a baby washcloth with a mixture of warm water and any of our shampoo will do the trick. The thing about Groomer And George's shampoo that is beneficial for a spot wash: it is ultra light in weight, easy to rinse (does not have a major lather, which would be annoying for a spot wash), and it is a gel-like serum to touch that is ultra nourishing, hydrating and non-irritating, especially our I'm Sensitive Unscented Dog & Cat Shampoo. Take it from one of our much loved clients.
From one of our clients, "Spring time is messy time around here. Melting snow, wet grass, mud puddles, etc. When our puppy gets into the yard, she is gets into everything. When she's done messing around, we have a messy, muddy, puppy. Instead of shampooing, I take a shortcut. I put a shot of "Stop And Smell Me" Lavender shampoo into the tub, run about two inches of water in it and get some bubbles going on. I have a one liter oval pitcher that I use to scoop the water up and pour it over Sicily, rubbing lightly as I pour. After she is clean, I drain the water and rinse her with fresh water. That is my way of doing a quick clean-up between shampooing and conditioning." - Derald
While we have seem waterless products on the market to cleanse paws, we are more a fan of products you can wash off, for a number of reasons. Many dogs lick their paws a number of times throughout the day and as long as you're doing your best to minimize the toxic load they are ingestion, you're good to go. We aren't helicopter parents by any means, but when it comes to the food we feed our dogs (health from the inside out), and the grooming products we use on them (shampoo, conditioner and detangling & deodorizing spray), we are a little OCD with good cause :)

One key factor in keeping your pup looking and feeling their best, AND staying protected from that hot summer sun? Conditioner! Who would have thought - but it does make sense. Read on to learn more about why conditioner is good for your dog’s skin and coat, particularly for those dogs with medium to long coats and especially during the summer months.
Think about your human hair when it’s not properly conditioned: it becomes dry and brittle, it breaks off - it’s actually painful! Like us humans, use of conditioner keeps your dog's coat soft and helps protect your dog's coat from breakage, especially when it's drying naturally either in heat & natural sun during the summer months or with the heat in our homes during the winter.
We tend to think that conditioner moisturizes and helps us detangle a furry coat when in drying-mode post bath. True, it does. Our conditioner is a fan-favorite in detangling and deodorizing all in one. But - the true magic is that conditioner also adds a layer of moisturizing oils onto the shaft of each hair which helps maintain an easy to brush coat, specifically for dogs who require regular brushing. Aka our Maltese babies who are prone to tangles because they play so hard outside in the elements! We recommend either of our two organic luxury dog conditioners that are pet and planet friendly, high performance and made with top quality ingredients 1) Pet Me I'm Soft Unscented Conditioner and 2) I'm Knotty Lavender Conditioner. All Groomer And George dog shampoo and conditioners are safe and non-medicinal so you can rest assured that it will keep your pup looking their best without any harsh chemicals or ingredients (ever)!
For best results, particularly with dogs who have medium to long coats, use conditioner on your pup about once every two weeks. Start by doing a double-wash (shampoo) followed up by a conditioner and thorough rinse. Of course, feel free to wash as frequently as you wish while being mindful of the condition of your dog's skin.
Stating the possibly not so obvious (we’ve got your back on the details!) —conditioners are key when it comes to protecting and maintaining a healthy coat on your pup this summer! Regularly washing and conditioning with products like Groomer And George's ultra gentle trio of shampoo and choice of 2 conditioner to chose from is essential if you want them looking their best all season long. So go ahead and give them some extra love this summer—they deserve it and so do you. One of our claim to fame is ease of use, i.e. easy to lather and rinse.
Knowing what you know now, you can properly prep your dog care kit for ALL THE SUMMER FUN ahead! You know where to find us! We'll be at the beach! Conditioner is key in keeping soft, moisturized locks from the summer heat breakage.

]]>What is this cricket-trend about anyway, and is it actually good for your dog?
Crickets are a superfood rich in Omega 3, Omega 6 fatty acids and B12. Crickets are an IDEAL ALTERNATIVE for dogs who have allergies to fish, and therefore have allergies or sensitivities to standard Omega 3 fish oil.
Crickets also support your pets gut health with pro and prebiotics. Probiotics are living organisms that restore gut flora. Prebiotics provide nourishment for the probiotics.
Feeding your dog Crickets is good for the planet too! Animal sourced proteins are the most common use in pet foods. In fact, our pets consume more meat than humans worldwide. When meat is produced major emissions are released. Beef is a major cause of deforestation on our planet.
By adding Crickets, we can all do a lot for our planet and our pets.

]]>Today we want to share a bit about the importance of structure and flexibility in your dog's daily routine through the lens of feeding times, fun activities, and communication cues, since we are big believers of whole-health and mental/emotional wellbeing for our furry best friends, our dogs (and yes, we love cats too).
Essentialism runs deep when establishing a routine for your dog, whether you're house-training them, scheduling feeding times or setting walk & exercise schedules. This structure instills a sense of security in your dog and also provides them with a sense of stability.
A note on setting everyone up for calm, contentment and success (humans and fur family alike), aim to keep things consistent, especially when you first bring your dog home. From feeding times to walks, creating a routine for them is essential. These actions act as anchors throughout their day and make them feel more comfortable in their environment. This also allows your dog to develop a pace within your household as they acclimatize to your needs and your schedule.
While we love a ritual, as do our dogs, it’s just as important to instill a sense of flexibility and adaptability for those times when the schedule needs to be just that - flexible. You might be traveling.
One of the most important factors around consistency is the times of day you feed your dog. Just like humans, dog’s need a nutrient dense meal in the morning to have the cognitive function and energy to start their day off on a positive foot. Dogs are creatures of habit and tend to anticipate their feeding times. Not only does setting a schedule help with digestion, and it also supports bathroom training (time of day, etc). Dogs with set feeding times and schedules tend to have healthier diets and develop fewer health problems (the DREAM!). Healthy dogs live longer and we want our furry children to live as long as earthly possible.
Food aside, and just like humans, dogs also need something to look forward to! The “W” word (you know the one). Walking, hiking, brushing & bathing or just having fun playtime are activities and quality time that dogs adore. These activities provide crucial mental and physical stimulation, which keeps them healthy, happy, and energetic. While dogs love routine, switching up these activities now and then is crucial as well. For example, going on unfamiliar routes or playing new games can make them more adaptable and less anxious of changes. If your dog is “acting up”, ask yourself whether they have had their needs met for the day, because all needs are a must to be met daily for a happy, healthy, well behaved furry baby. Needs being: caring for the vitals (food, water, cleanliness care & health), love and connection (emotional wellbeing), cognitive & physical stimulation. It is just as essential to address your dog’s need for fun and excitement as it is for food and shelter.
Back to our theme of consistency and rituals, dogs are social animals, and communication is everything. They thrive on connection, and it's important to communicate with your dog to establish trust and mutual respect ~ and with consistency, this instills behavior in them that allows them to thrive and interact well with others in the world. It's important to speak with your dog in a way that they can interpret and understand; kind, loving, clear. This can include verbal cues, body language, and facial expressions. By creating communication cues, your dog can learn proper responses, which helps them cope with changes in routine. This way, they can better anticipate their day by understanding what you're asking or expecting of them, and therefore, reduce their anxiety level.
In wrapping up this week’s theme, it is clear that routine and rituals are as essential to your dog's life as they are to your life! Establishing a routine teaches your dog to be flexible and adaptable to new situations, which is vital for their mental health and setting everyone up for success. Yes, it takes time, effort, and patience to establish a proper routine that works for you and your furry friend. But - in the end, it is SO worth it for a calmer, more relaxed, and predictable life for all. So, keep the feeding times consistent, add new treats now and then, switch up the fun activities, and communicate with your dog to establish a connection that helps them cope with the everyday changes and stresses!
We hope this helps! And for bath time as quality time, don’t forget that Groomer And George has your back. Shop any of our organic, sustainable, calming, nourishing, high performance dog shampoo and conditioner here.
]]>Stating the obvious, our dogs (and cats) aren’t strutting around the house with socks or shoes on. They are pawing their way around their domain with their gentle padded paws. Paws that they LICK. Think about whatever you put on your floor (cleaning supplies and anything you carry in from the outside), consider it a likelihood to make it onto their paws and possibly into their mouth. As pet guardians and parents, we must act with diligence and responsibility for our furry angel’s safety.
Back to your floors. Have you ever given a thought about what you are cleaning your floors with? Sure you want to cut the grime and rid the outside world off of your indoor floors (think about all the nastiness your shoes carry, honestly) but not at the expense of causing your dog’s health to take a nosedive. Only in recent years have cleaning products become “cleaner” or more “earth friendly” or “natural”. But - not all of those “natural products" on the market are safe ones for your dog (or cat) to be licking their paws from. Let’s dive in and take a closer look!
It’s pretty clear that certain cleaners can be harmful to our pets, but some natural cleaning products can be dangerous too. Take tea tree oil, for example, which is used as a natural cleaning product and is known to have many positive benefits, but excessive use of this oil can lead to severe poisoning of our furry friends. Even a mere 7 drops of the concentrated oil can be toxic and result in severe illness. Usage of 10-20 ml of 100% oil has resulted in poisoning and death in both dogs and cats.
Reminder: our furry family members come in contact with the floors more than we do, and their paws are sensitive to cleaning agents' reactions! Hence, we need to be mindful of the cleaning agents we use in our homes.
One of the most effective ways to clean your floors without harming your furry ones is to use distilled white vinegar and add drops of lavender essential oil. This natural cleaning solution is safe to use around pets and leaves a refreshing aroma without any side effects. Not only is it safe for your furry family members, but it is also safe for your other family members and the environment. One of our favorite essential oil companies is Vitruvi! Hit them up for any of your essential oil needs and, be sure the do your research on which essential oils are dog (and cat) friendly.
All of Groomer And George's products (shampoo, conditioner and deodorizer & detangling spray) are naturally fragranced from source AND use essential oils that are safe for use on dogs. The ONE product we have that is safe for cats is our I'm Sensitive Unscented Shampoo for Cats & Dogs.
Back to house hold cleaning agents that are not dog safe and earth friendly. A few brands we can get down with in the clean, sustainable and dog-friendly department are: Branch Basics and Common Good. Each has home starter packs, refills, and fulfill all home cleaning needs purposes.
The punchline of today’s message is mindfulness in all ways, shapes and forms ~ this time, with your pet’s safety and health at the forefront. Healthy dogs live longer, happier lives! ~ and that’s what we are here to support you becoming educated on with each insight we share. So the next time you reach out for cleaning agents, choose one that is safe and non-toxic for your furry family members. Opt for natural cleaning products like distilled white vinegar and lavender essential oils or go for eco-friendly cleaning agents available in the market. Do your own research always ~ and again, we are true fans of Branch Basics and Common Good in this category. Your furry family members will thank you for it in every little way they can!
With Love, Groomer And George
]]>Prior to choosing what type of dog shampoo and conditioner you'll use, we invite you to take a handful of factors into consideration - especially if your dog requires extra care for either dry or oily skin (or coat types). ]]>First up on the subject of grooming is bathing; our speciality! Let’s chat about choosing the right shampoo. One of the most important parts of grooming is shampooing. And when it comes to choosing the right product, there are several factors to consider. The first is ease of use — because let’s face it, no one wants a long bath time experience with their furry angel baby! When shopping around, look for shampoos that are easy to rinse away with one wash so bath time isn’t drawn out any longer than necessary. Another factor is scent/fragrance — some dogs don’t like strong fragrances (irritates them) and thus they may squirm or not cooperate during the ritual of bath time if they don’t like the smell of your shampoo. Next up, look for products that are free from toxins and safe for both your pup and yourself — because you should never have to sacrifice safety for ease of use! Fortunately, Groomer And George has got you covered on all fronts with their 100% organic, sustainable, cruelty-free dog shampoo and skincare solutions (we have a number of options) that makes bath time simple and fast — plus all of our products are naturally fragranced from source and smell great too! After a double wash (and rinse) of shampoo, we suggest one of our conditioners for dogs with medium to long coat types.
The second step in grooming is selecting the right tools for the job — brushes and combs specifically designed for pets can help keep your pup looking clean and happy year-round. Look for tools made with rounded edges so they won’t irritate your pup’s skin while brushing or combing through tangles or mats (yes, even long-haired pups get knots!). Also look to invest in tools that work well on wet fur as well as dry fur — this way you can brush before or after bathing without damaging your dog’s coat in either situation.
Getting out ahead of a bath (and successful grooming session): when it comes time to take care of those pesky knots or mats in your pet’s coat — be patient! These types of tangles can be uncomfortable or even painful if not brushed correctly (or worse yet brushed at all!). Be gentle but firm with brushing sessions so as not to cause discomfort but also ensure that all tangles are removed properly over time. Additionally, give lots of praise throughout each session — every pup needs a little love from time-to-time as well! We recommend Groomer And George’s Jet Set Pet Detangling & Deodorizing Spray to ensure de-matting and knot removal is as quick and painless as possible ~ plus the natural fragrance in refresh is a dream with notes of lavender, lime, sage and frankincense.
We hope this intro of tips and tools shared today helps everyone, and especially those just starting out on their puppy care journey so that they can effortlessly and joyfully take proper care of their pup's grooming needs without feeling overwhelmed by new tasks or uncertain about which products they need. Shop all shampoo and conditioner right here at Groomer And George's online shop or at one of our much-loved retail partners so you can begin confidently taking care of your pup today!
]]>Body Language Basics
When we talk about body language, we often refer to it as a form of nonverbal communication. This means that instead of using words, you use physical cues in order to communicate with another person or animal. When it comes to communicating with your dog, this kind of body language can go a long way. Dogs understand us better than we think they do — they are masters at reading our facial expressions, body postures, and even our tone of voice! By utilizing these cues when talking to your pup, you can easily get them to understand what it is that you would like from them (a request).
Using Positive Reinforcement
One way to make use of body language when communicating with your pup is by using positive reinforcement. Did somebody say treat?! :) This means providing your dog with rewards (a treat, hugs, kisses, cuddles, positive acknowledgement) when they do something good — like sitting down on command or coming back when called. By providing positive reinforcement in the form of verbal praise, love or treats, dogs will learn quickly what behaviors are expected from them and which ones aren’t acceptable. Who are we kidding though, our dogs ALL have great manners! Additionally, positive reinforcement encourages your pup to continue repeating those good behaviors because they know there will be something in it for them! Nothing we love more than setting our furry besties up for a win.
Eye Contact Matters Too
Eye contact is also an important form of communication between people (and animals). When speaking with someone (or a pup), maintaining eye contact helps create trust between two parties while also showing respect for one another. In fact, many experts believe that avoiding eye contact can actually lead to aggression from both humans and animals — so it’s best not to do this if possible! For dogs specifically, making eye contact with them shows that you have taken the time to really listen and understand what it is they are saying without speaking any words at all! They don’t call it puppy love for nothing <3.
At Groomer And George we believe in whole health – mind, body & soul – for both pets and their owners alike. That includes having healthy communication between human-dogs too! While verbal commands may seem like the most logical way of getting our furry friends to listen up, don’t forget about the power of body language – including eye contact – too! Give your pup a chance by speaking in their love-language instead of just speaking in yours (words). Your relationship will thank you for it later. With love, Groomer And George, because we love your dog too!
Here are Groomer And George we humans LOVE bath time as positive reinforcement after a long day! And we too, know that our furry babies love a good bath too - when getting a fresh wash and rinse with the best easy to lather and rinse Groomer And George shampoo and conditioner. Shop any of your favorites here and enter NEWFURFRIEND at checkout for 15% off.
]]>Choosing Treats & Toys
When selecting treats or toys for your pup, make sure you read the label carefully and select something appropriate for their size. Remember that small pieces of toys or treats are choking hazards! We know you know, we are just reminding you. Many small toys have buttons and such, and hence, just a reminder to always check for loose parts/pieces on favorite stuffies. Also consider the materials used in the product. Some dogs may have allergies or sensitivities to certain materials such as plastic and rubber, or even synthetic fiber (material). Take note of how long it takes your pup to destroy the toy. Durable toys will last longer than soft toys that rip easily; however, if your pup loves destroying stuffed animals then there are plenty of durable stuffing-free options available as well!
Selecting Food & Treats
When selecting food for your pup, make sure you read the label carefully to ensure it is appropriate for their age, size, breed and activity level. For more on choosing food, read this (we are passionate about feeding around here!). Don’t forget about treats too! Just like with toys, make sure you read labels carefully so you know exactly what is going into their bodies. If you are unsure about an ingredient or unsure if a product is suitable for your pup—ask questions! Many pet store owners are knowledgeable in this area and can point you in the right direction when selecting foods or treats.
Bathtime & Grooming
When selecting grooming products for your pup make sure you read labels carefully so that you know exactly what is in them. Many product may “seem clean” when in reality there is plenty of greenwashing that goes on - meaning: the ingredients may seem harmless, although when combined into a finished product, those once “fine” ingredients have cranked up the intensity to become that of dangerous chemically, dare we say toxic, to a degree. Some dogs can be sensitive to ingredients found in shampoos and other grooming products such as fragrances or chemical compounds so choose something natural when possible. Groomer And George is proud to disclose all of our ingredients on our website; nothing is hidden and we have your best furry mate’s best interest in mind. Also to note: ensure whatever product you choose is also suitable for your pups coat type; some breeds require special shampoos such as those formulated specifically for double coats while others need something lighter such as a hypoallergenic shampoo designed specifically for sensitive skinned pups. Some need both shampoo and conditioner, others not. Also think to oily, dry or normal skin type. Have a question about what type of shampoo is best for your dog? Email us anytime: hello@groomerandgeorge.com.
Taking the time to get to know what works best for both you and your pup will help create a bond between the two of you by allowing each of you to express yourselves through trial and error while finding out what works best together! Whether it’s discovering which toys they love playing with most or which shampoos give them their fluffy, shiny, fresh and clean coat - this journey of getting acquainted with one another should be filled with fun experiences along the way - because at the end of the day, we all want our beloved pets feel comfortable enough around us that they would pick us out from a room full of strangers without hesitation!
]]>When it comes to caring for your beloved pup, there’s no such thing as ‘too much care’. Dogs need proper grooming and bathing in order to stay healthy and hygienic, but it’s also important to be conscious of the products we use on our furry family members. Many dog parents don't realize that using stronger fragranced shampoo (harsher chemical compounds) on their dog can be detrimental to their health, both physically and mentally. That's why using a naturally fragranced from source dog shampoo is so critical for your pup!
Dogs have an incredibly sensitive olfactory system that is much more powerful than humans. This means they are able to detect even the smallest amount of a fragrance with greater intensity than us. This heightened sensitivity leaves them susceptible to toxic ingredients or harsh chemical fragrances found in many common pet shampoos which can disrupt their endocrine system (and hormones) leading to unnecessary potential medical issues. When exposed to these kinds of ingredients, our pups may suffer from respiratory issues, skin irritations, or other adverse reactions. It’s important to note that all perfumes or scented items often contain synthetic chemicals or fragrances, which can lead to similar problems for our furry friends.
A word to the wise when shopping for safe and effective pet care: look at ingredients and the process used to create the product you are choosing for your furry family member. Oftentimes lesser quality ingredients may bring down the cost of the product you are choosing, but in turn increase potential harm to your pet. Groomer And George is incredibly mindful of all ingredients we source and the process in which all ingredients go through to translate into our finished, highly effective and safe product for you to use with confidence on your pup.
This is why Groomer And George is the safest choice when it comes to caring for your dog during bath time! All of our products are made with 100% organic, natural plant-based extracts and essential oils, giving your pup a naturally pleasant fragrance without any of the harmful side effects that come with harsher chemical-based shampoos. Try any one of our shampoo and conditioners: unscented, lavender and orange & oatmeal. The unique combination of natural ingredients and Dr. Emoto’s energetically charged water preservation process helps lock in moisture while providing protection against environmental stresses such as dirt and pollution. Groomer And George has also taken extra measures in making sure our formulas are hypoallergenic and safe for use on sensitive skin--so you can trust that you’re giving your pup nothing but the best!
Next time you reach for a bottle of pet shampoo for bath time, remember the importance of using a naturally fragranced from source dog shampoo like Groomer And George Organic Apothecary for Dogs! Not only will we keep your pup smelling fresh and clean without any toxins or harsh chemicals, but you can rest assured knowing you’re doing what’s best for their overall health and well-being!

]]>Needless to say, grooming and bathing your furry family member is an essential part of caring for your pet's wellbeing! Not only does it ensure your dog is free of fleas and other pests, but it also keeps their coat in good condition and reduces the chances of matting. If you have a medium to longer haired coat fur baby, you know matting can be a real thing even when you're doing your best to keep those mats at bay!
Regular brushing stimulates the natural oils in your dog's fur, making it softer and more glossy while also preventing skin problems like dryness or itchiness. If your dog is itchy, shop Groomer And George's Stop And Smell Me Lavender Shampoo and I'm Knotty Lavender Conditioner (can also be shopped as a duo for additional savings). If your dog's skin is dry, choose our Love Me Bathe Me Orange and Oatmeal for additional hydration and nourishment. A bonus to brushing: many dogs find the calming sensation from being brushed soothing and enjoyable! And of course, there's nothing quite like those post-bath cuddles that come from having a clean and fresh-smelling pup!
Healthy dogs who aren't exposed to toxic products live longer– it's as simple as that. That's why using 100% organic toxin-free shampoos during bath time is so important for both your pet's physical health as well as their mental wellbeing. Groomer And George's natural products are not only gentle on their skin and fur but also contain calming ingredients like lavender or chamomile to help reduce stress during bath time.
Bonding with dogs doesn't just mean playtime or cuddles; caretaking activities such as grooming are just as important when it comes to developing trust between you two. Taking the time to show them how much you care by dedicating regular grooming sessions helps create a loving relationship between you two which will last a lifetime! In addition to reducing stress levels in both of you, these moments can become special memory markers for years to come – all thanks to spending quality time together!

Practically speaking, you don't know what to expect aside from the fact that you have a new, warm-bodied furry soul in the house to love, feed and care for.
Stating the obvious, but we are sure it's happened before, you pick up your baby, and perhaps you have not yet shopped for the basics. In this share we will cover the basics you will want to have on hand for night #1 when you're bringing a furry family member home for the first time.
Let's get straight to a (very) short list of what you'll need for the first night:
This is a short list of what to have on hand when bringing your new furry family member home that covers the basics; food, care and comfort. The biggest thing to remember is that inclusion and LOVE are the key ingredients to this puzzle you're newly putting together. We will share more on bonding, routines, food, travel and so much more in future blog posts - and, the most important thing to remember above all is to seal it all in with inclusion and love. Just like humans, dogs want to be loved and included. Give them a chance. Set them up to win. They really do just want to do their best (as us humans do) and hence, we must support them the best we can, teach them, love them and give them chances.
Comment below your first memories of your dog(s) when you brought them home! We would love to know.
And if you've made it this far, this is a must read for new and longtime pet parents.

Stating the obvious, bones are a pleasure zone and a zone of contentment for most dogs. Chewing on bones not only keeps your dog busy, they also provide nutrients, help clean their teeth and support gum health. So important!
Something we take seriously (as non helicopter parents) is safety. Something that gets overlooked: keeping an eye on your dog once you’ve given them a bone, as some dogs chew gently while others are more aggressive. Some dogs inhale what they are chewing before you can blink an eye!
Depending on how your dog chews, this will dictate the type of bone you choose for them. Important to note: bones should never be cooked and taken away when they begin to crack.
For gentler chewing dogs: beef bones and femurs are great.
The size of the bone you choose should also be according to your dog's size. I.e. small bones for small dogs, large bones for large dogs.
For the more aggressive chewing dog: chicken necks, turkey necks, whole herring, beef, or buffalo knuckles are all great choices.
Note: Necks should be considered a meal which is important to know if your dog has pancreatitis or liver disease.
For dogs that inhale things: do not give bones larger than your pets mouth and watch them :) !
Finished with a bone? Try turning it into a broth for digestion support. Makes an excellent hydrator for kibble.
]]>Which brings us to our topic du jour: flushing things down the drain, or in this case, flushing dog and cat #2 (if you know what we mean) down the toilet. Smart idea? One would think, but no it’s actually not the best for the environment.
So what’s the big problem with flushing your dog or cat's waste down the toilet after cleaning the litter box or if your dog had an accident in the house? The issue is the way in which this waste does not harmonize with living species in our water.
Cat feces contains a Toxoplasma Gondi which is a parasite known to kill our sea otters. This parasite is not killed in sewage treatment. Dog waste on the other hand contains phosphorus and nitrogen which depletes oxygen that marine life needs to survive. This is especially true in the summer which also causes the growth of algae.
It may seem convenient to flush things down the toilet, but we need to respect how it affects our water ways. Instead of flushing any of your pet waste down the drain simply walk it outside and use it as fertilizer. Also to note: please use compostable bags as opposed to plastic when you are picking up puppy poop. Our favorite doggy doo bags come from Earth’s Rated.
Thank you for taking the time to read this unsexy topic and to reconsider this one thing that does indeed make a big stinkin’ difference in our ecosystem. Pun intended :)
]]>Cats should NEVER have contact with essential oils. Oils such as Lavender contain compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate. These compounds can cause liver damage to cats, as a cat’s liver is unable to process these compounds. A cat’s sense of smell is 14 times higher than ours. Peppermint oil, citrus, tea tree, and eucalyptus are a few other essential oils that should never be used on your cat or in an essential oil burner in your home.
If your cat has long hair, goes outdoors and tends to tangle, try our Pet Me I’m Soft as a conditioner; this Groomer And George varietal is also unscented.
Cats generally lick themselves as a way of cleaning to rid themselves of parasites. You only need to bathe your cat if they get into things outdoors ~ think of any contaminants they may absorb from the soil, street or the air (even smoke burn-off).
For cats, bathing should not be more than once a month and if indoors maybe only once a year to help with shedding.
]]>As pet parents, naturally, we do not realize the irritation that comes with not bathing our dog in between grooming appointments because we aren’t the one’s experiencing the irritation! Think: itchiness from the elements, oiler skin because pores haven’t been cleansed, sneezing from ingesting contaminants from the elements through licking paws, etc.
Groomer And George isn’t just about a fluffy, shiny coat. What we are about is preventing allergies, providing soothing, simple solutions and having your baby also feel as comfortable as possible!
If you’re using the, “I go the groomer” card as reason to not have dog shampoo at home, our question is, “how are you keeping your dog clean in between grooms?!”
Indeed it is a choice to acknowledge those filthy paws, and that dirty coat that's spent time rolling around in the dust and the dirt, not to mention possible heavy metals being picked up on paws from soil, the dog park, asphalt or roadways in general. Not only does dirt build-up on paws and skin in between grooming appointments (scheduled baths), but that dirt can clog pores and create a host of other issues. Not to mention: how would you feel if you only bathed once every 4 to 6 weeks?!
Runny nose or sick puppy? Groomer And George is ultra safe to cleanse his or her face.
Out at the beach or camping in the wilderness and what to do? Using a name-brand cleanser to wash yourself and your pets in the elements will not be an option unless it's entirely planet friendly. Look no further as to what to keep on hand but Groomer And George ~ as we ARE pet and planet friendly and will not disrupt your pet’s endocrine system (hormones) nor will we disrupt the ecosystem.
Made for you, your pets and our planet in mind ~ Groomer And Geroge is also safe as a body wash for human use. We may have been bathing with it in the ocean this summer after shvitzing in the heat!
Also to note: we were mindful from the inside out when creating Groomer And George; quality product and a beautiful design to ensure you wouldn't have to "stuff the bottle" under the counter in an aesthetically pleasing home-zone :)
]]>Sodium hydroxide is what causes the burn when you get shampoo or soap in your eyes. Sodium hydroxide is also used in drain cleaners! When saponification (what occurs in the production process when using coconut oil) is found in natural soaps, we like to call that “green washing”, meaning it is not completely eco friendly.
Groomer And George uses “Guar Gum” as our lathering agent. Guar Gum not only helps our product lather, but it conditions the skin & coat and creates a longer shelf life on our product. Guar Gum is extracted from Guar Beans and is a naturally occurring plant substance often used in products as a thickening agent - and is completely, 100% pet-safe and planet safe.
Not having an oil base is what makes Groomer And George shampoos weightless on all coat types without harming our pets and our planet. Search no further for your answer to a fluffy, shiny coat brought to you with product that is easy to lather and rinse ~ given our base ingredient of organic floral water of lavender that is pristine and energetically charged.
]]>Fact of fiction? Fact. Yes this solves a partial and temporary need.
Another fact: harsh, chemical dish soap is not only harsh on your dog’s skin (it will burn it), but it actually only kills the adult fleas by destroying their exoskeleton.
Fleas have three life stages and hence washing them with a chemically harsh dish soap is only a temporary fix for a few days.
Chemically harsh dish soap is also not PH balanced for your dogs skin and if they have sensitivities it will only irritate their skin further. Which equals MORE PROBLEMS.
One of the best natural flea solutions and prevention products you can use is food grade Diatomaceous Earth.
When we say food grade, this is the Diatomaceous Earth sold in pet stores not the one from your hardware store. Diatomaceous Earth will kill the exoskeleton of fleas in all stages.
What’s to actually do to get rid of fleas in a lasting way? Wash your dog with Groomer and George Stop and Smell Me and apply the Diatomaceous Earth to your dog’s dry coat. Also cover Diatomaceous Earth on surfaces such as carpets, leave it for four days and vacuum. Important: you must treat areas that could have eggs on it!
P.S. Dish soap is called dish soap because it is for dishes not dogs :D
P.S.S. The angel in this photo washing the dog for sure is sensibly, ethically and safely washing her bulldog! We just know it.

]]>Does your dog love to curl up next to you, lay on your chest, use you as human body pillow and get those belly rubs in? If so, their love language is most likely physical touch. These dogs are not shy about their love for sharing hugs and kisses, and they very much express their love through physical attention. They will show their affection by snuggling up against you or even giving you big kisses when you're not looking. They are the type of dogs that will sit by the door waiting for you to come home just so they can be in your arms. And we love them for this!
If your pup follows you everywhere around the house (think: lays on the bathmat, and follows you to the bathroom) or if they can't stand to be separated from you, they are likely expressing love through quality time. These dogs want to be with you at every moment possible and they thrive on companionship. They will be happiest when they can be in your presence, sharing activities like walks, going on car rides, playing or just laying around. They see spending time with you as the ultimate expression of your love.
Interestingly, for some dogs, words of affirmation are the way to their hearts. These dogs are the ones who light up when they hear their name and receive verbal praise from you. Their love language involves direct language, and they respond accordingly when they receive positivity from you. They need to hear loving words from you to feel their bond is strong, and they will repay you by responding positively to your praise and love.
Some dogs feel loved through acts of service. They are the ones happily following your commands and doing what you ask for faithfully. These dogs want to help you and be part of your routines in their way. They may bring you their toys, a chewed piece of corn on the cob (we've had that happen, picked out of the recycling)! or help you with tasks like carrying groceries inside. They see doing these things as a way to show their love and loyalty.
Finally, receiving gifts is another love language that some dogs have! These dogs love to receive treats, toys or any other item that will make them feel special. They see these items as an extension of your love for them, and they will take full advantage of it. You'll know if your dog has this love language when they react positively to the treats or toys you give them, showing their love in return.
Understanding your dog's love language is essential for building a strong bond and a healthy relationship. By figuring out what makes your dog feel loved, you can cater to their needs better and make them feel appreciated. It can also help you communicate better with your dog, leading to a stronger connection between you and your furry companion. So, what love language does your dog speak? Take a moment to observe their behavior and see which one stands out. You might find that understanding their love language will lead to more kisses, snuggles, and tail wags than ever before.
In our humble opinion, bath time is one of the greatest forms of quality time! As truly passionate dog parents in this department, Groomer And George has your back. Shop any of our organic, sustainable, calming, nourishing, high performance dog shampoo and conditioner here.

]]>We know, dogs don’t come with instructions and unless you have someone asking you thorough questions specific to your dogs needs and responding with an educated response as to what and how to feed them for optimal health benefits that extend well beyond breakfast, how would you know what to be feeding them otherwise?
What does “feeding raw” really entail?
On the most basic level, the raw diet is an ancestral diet made of whole prey animals including muscle meat, organs, bone and fruits and vegetables. Just writing out the word “organs” reminds us of when our grandparents used to eat the neck of a turkey! OY! Dogs aside, the generation of organ meat was a thing for humans.

]]>Probiotics are not just for humans! Probiotics are vital to proper gut health and are one of the easiest supplements you can add to your dog’s diet that will strengthen their immune system. Stronger immune systems prevent pathogens from taking hold and causing major disease. The release of anti-inflammatory substances of probiotics can also help relieve itchiness from allergies.
What to shop when choices are vast?
There are many different probiotic forms on the market. Our favourite is the milks! Yes, actual milk. If you are feeding your dog kibble or freeze-dried food diet, a goat or sheep is a great way to hydrate your kibble or freeze dried. As the biological clock starts ticking and your dog keeps adding to their birthday count (aging) it can be harder for them to digest kibble. Solution: a milk chock full of probiotics is great to support their GI tract!
So, what is the difference between cow’s milk and sheep or goat?
Goat AND sheep milk are higher in calories and protein than cow’s milk. Goat and sheep milk also contain far less lactose, and - it's unpasteurized meaning it contains good bacteria and the bad. With goat and sheep milk as your probiotic and being higher in calories, it is not good for dogs with Pancreatitis and should never exceed 10% of your dog’s diet.
Try serving goat or sheep milk by freezing it individually in an ice cube tray for a yummy summer treat! #WOOF
]]>The good news after much trial and learning: I’ve found a solution that has finally stopped the staining around my beloved cutie, 3.5 year old Maltese Jasper (aka Party Shark and Jaspie, as his Aunt Sloan calls him)’s eyes.
Also to note: we have not had to have an eye surgery which I might add; never worked for my last dog, Georgie. No medication used either.
Tear stains are caused by your dog’s eye structure or certain health issues that can cause your dog to produce too much of something called porphyrin. When there is even just a slight raised amount of porphyrin it causes the excess tears and staining of the paws. This can be caused by excess yeast in the body or infection such as conjunctivitis. The majority of the time it is excess yeast in the body. On top of tear-stain as a visual, these stains sometimes also smell like stinky feet.
Food can cause excess yeast in the body. What foods do you ask? Corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, oats and peas are common sugars and carbs found in many commercial dog foods. These ingredients are especially and particularly found in canned food and kibble. A suggestion if you are a kibble feeder: hydrate your kibble with sheep or goat milk which is a probiotic.
Metals also contribute to yeast so filling up your dog’s bowl with filtered water is essential!
A true and healthy long term solution I have found supportive in more ways than just clearing up tear stains: feeding my dog Jasper a raw diet.
Important note: not all raw diets are equal - nor are dehydrated or freeze dried raw. A little education goes a LONG way in the nutrition department! Health is wealth and we are all about a preventative way of being around here for our pets (and ourself).
Porphyrin can also be caused by too much iron. Therefore, it is important that if your dog is on a raw diet that they have a ratio of at least 70 % muscle meat, 10 % organ, 10% bone and 10% fruit and vegetables.
In being a smart label reader: know that some raw food brands may be lower in muscle meat and then add iron to make up for it, creating higher iron levels which creates more tear stains.
Rotating different types of raw is ideal. In the last year, I have rotated Jasper on a raw food diet of proteins such as Boar, Kangaroo, Turkey, Bison, Beef and Chicken. His raw food contains heart as an organ, giving him adequate taurine with fresh fruits and veggies. I also supplement with Omega 3 and an Antioxidant with Blueberries. I always give him filtered water and his treats are freeze-dried whole ingredients. All of this considered, I can confidently say it has paid off!
Persistence, patience - and EDUCATION is key. This transformation didn’t happen overnight. We had a lot of daily face washes with Groomer and George before we got here :)

]]>As a former hairstylist, I always recommended you shampoo your dog twice. The first shampoo to remove the dirt and product build up, the second shampoo is to gain the benefits of the technology of ingredients in the shampoo.
When washing your dog this is no different. While dogs may not have product build up, depending on how dirty they are and how often they are bathed you may need to shampoo twice.
Groomer and George shampoos all contain nourishing ingredients such as avocado and macadamia. Without any harsh stripping chemicals Groomer And George products are gentle on your dog’s skin and coat. None of our three shampoos will weigh-down your dog's coat.
For longer coat types try our Pet Me I’m Soft Unscented Conditioner or our I’m Knotty Lavender Conditioner.

One of the safest natural products you can use to treat flea problem is food grade diatomaceous earth. There are two types of diatomaceous earth; one that will kill insects in the garden that you find in a hardware store, and the other that is food grade and found in a pet store. The food grade version is low in crystalline silica and considered safe for pets.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is a powder made from fossilized aquatic organisms. When fleas crawl over the fine powder it scrapes the insects exoskeleton causing them to die.
Diatomaceous earth is a product that is non staining. Cover all areas such as a rug or sofa that can’t be washed, leave for 4 days and vacuum.
Also try Groomer and George's Stop And Smell Me Lavender Shampoo and I'm Knotty Lavender Conditioner as a natural prevention to help ward off fleas in the first place.

The reality? Some breeds are just more prone to matts than others such as the Maltese, Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear and the Poodle, to name but a few. This applies to our very own tribe, Sadie, Jasper and Daisy, hence we are major advocates of Groomer And George conditioner which make our lives easier in keeping the knots and matts at bay!
The good news: there are some keys to preventing matts.
Living in a damp climate and being parent to Jasper, my Maltese, I have experienced once in my lifetime the horror of having to shave him due to matts. This was a learning opportunity to never have it happen again in between grooming appointments.
Sadie, one of Sloan's dogs, who is part Maltese, part Yorkshire Terrier, plays hard rain or shine and the result: some pretty knotty, sometimes matted hair. The combination of her fluffy cotton-fine Maltese hair mixed with her course wire-y Terrier hair mixed with some rain makes for the perfect storm of matts when her hair is longer, even when being combed, brushed, etc.
Here are a few takeaways and tips to prevent matting on your medium to longer haired dog's coat:
Try our I’m Knotty Lavender Conditioner or Pet Me I’m Soft Unscented Conditioner to help prevent further tangling and let us know what you think! We love hearing from you and connecting with you.

]]>Being meticulous, I am always cleaning. And when covid hit we were ALL cleaning! Everywhere you went there were disposal wipes being used to clean. Sadly, many of those disposable wipes are made of tiny beads of plastic that never break down in the earth and end up killing our marine mammals when flushed down the toilet. This is one of the reasons Groomer And George does not make disposal eye wipes. We recommend a reusable and washable cloth.
Over the years, I have made my own antibacterial cleaners with vinegar and baking soda. Along the way I have learned that some of the essential oils that we use in aromatherapy and for natural cleaning are toxic and deadly for cats and dogs. A few examples are tea tree oil, pine oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and citrus, to name a few.
One of the best products I found for disinfecting at the beginning of the pandemic was stabilized colloidal silver!
Stable colloidal silver is an antibacterial, anti-fungal and has antiviral properties. You can spray it directly onto surfaces. Stable colloidal silver is nontoxic to pets and can be used as a wound cleaner or to treat skin conditions such as ringworm and even ear infections. It's perfect for cleaning a cat’s litter box or your dog’s placemat.
Next time you’re at your local pet retailer find yourself some Stabilized Colloidal Silver; it will change how you disinfect. In our opinion, this should be in every earth conscious, pet loving home!
